Is Life Fair? Maybe the Question Is Wrong

Finding meaning when things don’t add up

Is life fair?

Honestly… most days, it feels like a big nope. Some people work tirelessly and still struggle, while others seem to receive blessings without even asking. Plans fall apart, heartbreak happens without warnings, and sometimes, even when you give your best, the outcome isn’t what you deserve. So yeah — life doesn’t always play by fair rules.

But here’s where it gets interesting: maybe fairness was never the point.

Life isn’t a perfectly balanced scoreboard. It’s messy, unpredictable, full of surprises — both painful and beautiful. We often compare our journey with others and expect some cosmic justice to keep everything equal. When it doesn’t happen, we feel cheated. But imagine if life was perfectly fair. Would we ever grow? Would we ever push ourselves? Would we appreciate the times when luck finally shines on us?

Fairness isn’t guaranteed, but freedom to choose how we respond — that’s in our hands.

Maybe the real power lies in how we rise when things fall apart. When situations are unfair, we learn resilience. When people hurt us, we learn boundaries. When opportunities vanish, we learn creativity. Every tough moment leaves us with a skill, a lesson, or a deeper version of ourselves.

Think of all the times life surprised you in a good way — a new friend, a job chance, a random compliment that made your day. We don’t question fairness then. We just accept the joy and move on. But the hard days? We sit with them longer, trying to decode the “why”.

Maybe that’s where life balances itself — through growth we don’t notice in the moment.

Life may not be fair, but it can still be meaningful.

It can still be beautiful.

It can still be yours.

So the next time you feel like life is treating you unjustly, remind yourself — you’re not here just to survive fairness. You’re here to evolve through reality.

Fair or not, life is happening for you, shaping you into someone stronger, wiser, and more compassionate than yesterday.
