Mental Fitness in the Fast Lane

The common questions, “How do you feel today?” or “You look sad, is everything okay?” often evoke instinctual defenses. But why is it that we shy away when someone touches upon our mental state, unless they’re someone we deeply trust? This is a reflection of a deeper societal issue — the stigma associated with mental health.

For many, even admitting to themselves that they’re struggling mentally is tough. The fear intensifies when thinking about sharing these feelings with colleagues. They fret over judgments, misinterpretations, or even the risk of jeopardizing their job. This isn’t just limited to the workplace; often, even our close friends and family are left uninformed about the battles we fight within, be it depression, PTSD, or any other condition.

This stigma, deeply entrenched in societal perceptions, paints those with mental health issues as weak, incapable of handling stress, or, quite derogatorily, as “losers”. In our quest to appear as superheroes, we neglect the very essence of self-awareness and understanding.

Both mental and physical health play pivotal roles in our overall wellness. Conditions like depression don’t just weigh on the mind; they also amplify risks for several physical health issues. Chronic diseases can, in turn, pave the way for mental illnesses. Hence, the mind-body connection is undeniable and profound.

But what brings about mental illness? There’s no singular answer. From traumatic childhood experiences, ongoing struggles with conditions like cancer or diabetes, to biological factors or substance use — the reasons are manifold. Loneliness and isolation, too, often silently contribute to the deteriorating state of one’s mental health.

World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10th, serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and fostering good mental health. It’s not merely a day; it’s a movement urging us to shed our inhibitions, embrace self-awareness, and bolster support mechanisms.

In conclusion, it’s imperative that we rise beyond mere token gestures. Let’s genuinely pledge to foster an environment of understanding, breaking down walls of prejudice, and building bridges of support. On this World Mental Health Day, and every day hence, let’s ensure that no one feels alone in their journey.

It’s only recently that when someone asks me about how I am doing, I speak the truth. If I am unwell, I say it, if I have something that concerns me, I say it, if I am happy I say it. I think we all shall invest in our mental health and speaking out the truth about ourselves I think it is the first step. Interesting post!

Thank you for this wonderful post. I think it’s vital for us to take care of our mental health even if we don’t suffer from mental health problems. And it seems these days people have less and less time for their mental health which is very sad.
